As more and more EV's make it onto our roadways, people start to freak out about how we're going to charge all these things. The thing is, they shouldn't. EV's are so much more efficient than their gasoline powered counterparts that they don't consume all that much electricity, in fact the size of the grid only needs to increase about 4.5% to accommodate an entirely electric commuter fleet. • Installing 240 volt Wiring for EV Charging

This video is an explanation of how I installed 240 volt service in our garage to charge our EV (electric vehicle). After purchasing a used 2013 Nissan Leaf S, I opted to install 240 volt service in my garage, right next to where the car is parked, which also happens to be right next to the main circuit breaker panel. 240 volt charging is much faster than 120 volt charging. Spoiler alert: the 2013 Nissan Leaf S does not support fast charging (neither 30 amps, nor DC fast charging), but rather only up to 15 amps at 240 volts. I didn't know this initially, so I purchased a 32 amp charger on Amazon and installed 40 amp electrical service, a NEMA 14-50 outlet, and a GFCI disconnect subpanel because there was only one extra bus bar in the main panel--a tandem breaker in the main panel saved...

Although I made this video to accompany my video for the charging station installation, you can learn how to install a breaker and hook it up to any appliance by watching this video. You have to remember to select a breaker that fits into your circuit breaker panel, and to select a breaker such that 80 percent of the amperage limit rating for the breaker is equal to or greater than the maximum current rating for the appliance. So for example, for a 30 watt appliance, such as the charging station we install, the 40 amp breaker is sufficient. In the other two videos in this series you can see the unboxing ...

Charging your car if you can’t install a charger at home can be tricky, but it doesn’t have to be. // Sign up for these updates at https://teslanomics.co/join Ideally, you’d have a setup at your house. For example, at my home, I have a  NEMA 14-50 outlet. But what if you can’t install a charger at your home like this? Maybe you don’t have a garage or live in an apartment complex that won’t install a charger? That’s when you’ll have to go public At home, depending on your equipment, you’ll likely get Level 2 charging rates. This will get you between 20mi of charge per hour which is around 31kph. If you don’t want to wait that long, you’ll want to find a DC Fast Charger. Some even call these Level 3 chargers. The most common connector for a DC Fast Charger is the CHAdeMO plug and is popular in both the US and Europe.  The last option regarding charging connectors is for Tesla. The Tesla Supercharger could be called a Level 4 charger with the fastest rates available. // https://evobsession.com/?s=charging+101 With over 1,000 locations across the US EVgo is relatively small but does seem to have decent availability in more urban areas. As far as costs go EVgo offers several plans depending on your needs. When looking at the plan choices, it seemed confusing, especially since they charge based on the amount of time versus the amount of energy. Next, we have the most extensive charging network provider, ChargePoint. At the station by my house, the rate was $0.35 per kWh which may sound high, but when you consider our peak rates in San Diego are over 0.40, it’s a good deal. In addition to the per kWh rate, they will limit the amount of time you can charge at a station. T Another popular network here in southern California is Blink. Blink reports over 4K chargers and they do offer fast charging. A new startup from San Francisco, Volta, is looking to disrupt this market with free charging. The model is based on showing ads on their massive display stations located next to where you plug in to charge.  Tesla owners get some additional options with the supercharger and destination charger networks.  The supercharger network is currently the fastest way to charge of any EV. In about 30min you can get upwards of 170 miles, just under 275km of charge. The supercharger network has over 7K chargers and is prevalent in the US, Europe, and Asia. For Model S and X owners who purchased before May of 2017 Supercharging is Free. New Model S and X owners that used a referral code, such as ours which you can get at https://teslanomics.co/td also get free supercharging. https://public.tableau.com/profile/bens#!/vizhome/TeslaSuperchargerNetworkCosts/US In addition to the superchargers, Tesla partnered with many hotels and malls to offer destination chargers similar to what you can install at your home. These chargers are free for all Tesla’s but often are reserved for patrons of the store or hotel hosting them. When it comes to finding public chargers, there are lots of options. In my experience the best one is plugshare. //Charging https://www.plugshare.com/ https://openchargemap.org/site https://www.afdc.energy.gov/fuels/electricity_locations.html EV Match is another startup in this space is working to help pair drivers and people with chargers. The idea here is that people can share their home chargers with others in an Airbnb fashion where the host receives a small fee for providing you with a charge port and juice for your journey. https://www.evmatch.com/ So with all these options hopefully you can rest easy when it comes to finding a place to charge. // New here? As more and more EV's make it onto our roadways, people start to freak out about how we're going to charge all these things. The thing is, they shouldn't. EV's are so much more efficient than their gasoline powered counterparts that they don't consume all that much electricity, in fact the size of the grid only needs to increase about 4.5% to accommodate an entirely electric commuter fleet. But people still worry about charging them. In this video, I explain why this shouldn't worry you in the slightest. With my Chevy Volt, I never charge it with anything other than a standard household outlet, and this provides more than enough electricity to get me through my day. Granted, the Volt only has a 40 mile range, and I've got the gas engine to keep me going should I need it, but in the summer time I routinely make it home from work with 10 miles of range or more left. And it only takes 7 hours on my portable charger to get it full for the next day. A household outlet can provide enough electricity to add 80 miles of range to an EV every day, and if you take a look at how you actually drive, you'll discover that for the vast majority of the time, that's plenty. 1* 120V 16 A charging station: http://www.clippercreek.com/store/product/charging-station-acs-20-level-1-permanent-install/ 2* Cost of parking garages: http://www.carlwalker.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/April-Newsletter-2014.pdf Average commercial electricity cost: https://www.eia.gov/electricity/monthly/epm_table_grapher.cfm?t=epmt_5_3 Just a note: Level 3 charging, such as the Tesla Superchargers, is seen as a necessity by people looking into electric cars. There are many people that feel that having charging stations like these spread across the country is the only thing that will make electric cars feasible. Well, they certainly have their use, as the Superchargers allow Tesla owners to take roadtrips in their EVs. And it is true that DC fast charging is the only way to make an electric road trip possible. But road trips represent a tiny fraction of the miles driven by your typical car. People need access to Supercharger-like infrastructure *only* for road trips, as typical daily driving does not require fast charging. In fact, with a 200 mile EV, the battery can be completely recharged in 10 hours with 30 amp level 2 charging, the kind a dryer outlet can provide. People sleep every night, and when you're asleep your car will be charging for the next day of driving. It really is easier than you think.

You may feel embarrassed if there are people around, but you should be grateful if there is someone around the station who can explain things to you. When there was no one around, I had to spent a long time to figure things out myself. 1. For the evGo fast charger, pay attention to the tricky lever to unplug. There was no instruction on how to use it, you have to use trial and error, I was lucky someone explained it to me. 3. For the Blink faster charger, the charger itself was faulty, it was my first time and I was not familiar with the charger, there was no one to ask for help, so I wasted a lot of time to experiment on how to get it working. When I tried a second charger, the unit was not faulty, it was pretty easy. You only need to pay attention to how to latch it and how to unplug it. I hope by sharing my mistakes, this video can save you time and frustration. Happy charging. I didn't know this initially, so I purchased a 32 amp charger on Amazon and installed 40 amp electrical service, a NEMA 14-50 outlet, and a GFCI disconnect subpanel because there was only one extra bus bar in the main panel--a tandem breaker in the main panel saved the day. The charging cable had an LCD readout screen, and after plugging in the car, the screen said the car was only drawing 15 amps. After some Googling, I discovered the base-model Leaf only draws 15 amps, and I concluded that I had purchased too big of a charging cable. I returned it and bought a less-expensive cable ($400 vs. $220), and replaced the NEMA 14-50 outlet with a NEMA 6-20R. The wiring in the wall was done with 8/3 gauge wire, rated at 40 amps. After the outlet swap, I kept the NEMA 14-50 outlet so that if, later down the road (no pun intended) we opt for a higher-amp-drawing EV, we can install it with little modification. Since the wiring in the wall remained the same, except for a slight modification inside the junction box from the 8 gauge stranded wire to 12 gauge solid, it was not necessary to swap out the circuit breakers (remember, circuit breakers exist to protect the wiring, not the appliance). The outlet was installed 48" above grade, and with GFCI, to conform with electrical code. We also opted to purchase a Square D surge protector. Sorry about the portrait-orientation videos. You can get over it. If you have any questions or rants, feel free to comment. I'll be sure to reply with graceful tact. Legal disclaimer: this video is intended for entertainment and informative purposes only. It should not be used as reliable guidance for any DIY-er who may be looking to do a similar project. I assume no liability for your work after watching this video (In other words, you can't blame me for your lousy installation even if you watch this video and think that you're suddenly a genius).

In this video we install a 40 amp breaker into a circuit breaker panel and hook this up to an appliance, in this case, the GE electric vehicle (EV) Durastation Level 2 Charging Station. In the other two videos in this series you can see the unboxing of the GE Durastation, and then the mounting and connecting of the charging station to the circuit breaker.

http://300mpg.org/2013/07/26/going-solar-for-evs-and-more/ The other day, I made the trip to Helios Solar Works in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to pick up a B-Stock 400 watt / 48V solar panel. Both my electric motorcycle and 1970's electric Citicar run on 48V battery systems, and I'd like to solar charge them. I got a quick tour of the plant, then loaded up my panel and went home to start setting it up. In the next video, I'll cover hooking up the panel and actually charging a vehicle. If you want more info on the solar panel I got, please visit: http://www.heliossolarworks.com/modules/ This panel is from the 9T6 series and is rated at 405 watts.
